No. 1 Plato

Plato is by far the oldest of the locos of the CR&DJR having been purchased in the mid-1980s for an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to build a garden railway.

The technical specifications for Plato are:

• Chassis: 0-4-0, inside frames.
• Manufacturer: Mamod, West Midlands, UK.
• Standard Controls: water fill valve, water sight gauge, steam regulator/reversing valve, whistle.
• Boiler: Externally meths fired pot boiler, working pressue 10 psi, capacity 120 ml.
• Cylinders: oscillating, bore 9.5mm, stroke 14mm.
• Valve Gear: rotary reversing valve, oscillating cylinders.
• Overall Dimensions: Length 440 mm, height 290 mm, width 90 mm.
• Weight: 1.5 kg
• Gauge: 32mm

This rather blurry picture shows No. 1 in 1998 before he went into the workshops for extensive modifications.

I have fitted a meths burner and new safety valve from IP Engineering to No. 1 and currently the bodywork has been completely stripped. I have started on new bodywork that will transform the loco into a saddle tank. This project has been on the shelf for several years and isn't currently a high priority to complete, but here's a photo of the new bodywork in progress:
