Labor Day Railfair 2005 at the SPCRR

The SPCRR is a society dedicated to the preservation and restoration of rolling stock and other railroad artifacts built by the Carter Brothers in Newark California. The Carter Brothers began repairing railroad equipment in 1874, mainly rebuilding wooden cars for the South Pacific Coast Railroad (the original SPCRR). The Carter Brother's business lasted until 1902 during which time they built over 5,000 railroad cars mainly for narrow gauge lines.

Today the SPCRR restores Carter Brothers equipment and runs it on its 1 mile long 3ft. gauge line at Ardenwood Historic Farm Regional Park in Fremont, the next city over from Newark. Their railroad runs throughout the year and trains are usually powered by horses. However every Labor Day they hold a RailFair at Ardenwood and a guest steam loco is on hand to haul the passengers.

This year the visiting loco was No. 1 of the Antelope & Western Railroad. The #1 spot is a tiny 1889 H.K. Porter 0-4-0 ST which looked right at home hauling the eclectic SPCRR train. Also attending were the Bay Area Garden Railway Society (BAGRS) with their exhibition line and a splendid 1905 Best steam tractor.

I visited on Monday the September 5th, the last day of the RailFair. There are photos and videos below for you to enjoy, click on the following links:
