The Platform

The platform for Dolfor Junction station was a small project in its own right. Its built of two thick balsa planks glued together. Small flat slate chippings are used to edge the platform and finely ground slate dust is glued behind to form the surface. This early (January 2004) photo shows the balsa sandwich and slate covering well:

The slate for surfacing the platform is obtained from a set of domestic slate tiles. These are unfortunately of Chinese origin: its hard to find real Welsh slate tiles here in the US. These carefully cut tiles are then hit with a large hammer to reduce them to shards and fine dust:

After application of said hammer I have pick out large flat shards for the platform edging, and sweep up the fine dust for the surface:

The platform is now ready for covering. PVA glue is liberally applied and appropriate edging stones selected and stuck down, with slate dust spirnkled over to form the main surface. The front edge of the platform has fake slate tiles stuck on to provide a better edging.
